Dock Street Studios is now open and Son of the Sea Video and Photography popped down to the opening last night. It’s a collection of retail units although that’s too boring a term for what promises to be a hub of independent traders, designers and makers selling and showcasing unique furnishings, gifts and interiors.
The Studios are situated between the Malmaison Hotel and the exquisite looking Bird & Bear bar and restaurant on the west portion of Dock Street, overlooking Slessor Gardens and The Scottish Museum of Design aka V&A Dundee which is dues to open in the second half of 2018.

It’s no accident that I’ve used the phrase ‘lovely things’ by the way as the Lovely woman herself is one of the independents trading there now. Many of us have missed being able to pop in to Lynne’s Lovely Things and it’s great to see her back. I’ve been creating some marketing content for Lynne and a new business partner of her’s, local designer Andy Rice who together will be collaborating as NiCE – more news from them soon! You don’t need to wait until their official launch to sample the goods though – just pop down to Dock Street Studios, 9/10 Dock Street.

I chatted to the proprietor Sara for a bit and I’m definitely intrigued to see what opens up as they develop the space that reaches far into the ground floor, peeking through the curtain it looks cavernous and is certainly an old part of Dundee that’s been hidden and unused for too long. For now it’s just the front units that are open and there are already lots of lovely things for sale.

As a resident of Dundee one wonders what the finished Waterfront and Slessor Gardens surrounding area will eventually look like – it really is a genuine physical transformation and it’s nice (or should I say NiCE) to see independents making a mark on this new hub of commerce and creativity
